GVWR

Also called gross vehicle weight rating, gross vehicle weight, weight rating, GVM

GVWR is the maximum loaded weight the manufacturer certifies a vehicle for, printed on a label in the driver's door jamb, and it covers the vehicle, everything bolted to it, everyone in it and everything packed in it.

What is GVWR?

In United States federal law the definition is short and blunt: gross vehicle weight rating means the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single vehicle. It is not a legal speed limit or a warranty term or a suggestion. It is the number the manufacturer certified the vehicle's brakes, frame, axles, wheels and tires against.

It is on a certification label on the driver's door jamb of every vehicle sold in the US, alongside two more numbers that matter just as much and get read less: the gross axle weight ratings, front and rear. You can be under GVWR and over the rear axle rating, which is very easy to do with a camper or a bed full of water, and the axle rating is the one that governs.

Why this is a build number

Because every good thing you bolt on comes out of it. A steel front bumper and winch is a hundred and fifty pounds. A full skid plate set is another hundred and fifty. Sliders, a rack, a roof tent, a drawer system, a second battery, recovery gear, forty gallons of water at eight and a third pounds each. On a mid-size truck the accessories can consume the entire rating before anyone gets in.

GVWR is not a target to build up to. It is a budget you have already started spending.

Heavier springs and airbags change how the truck sits under load. They do not change the GVWR, because the rating was set against brakes and axles and tires, not against ride height. A truck that sits level while overloaded is still overloaded.
