Driving light

Also called driving lights, driving lamp, auxiliary driving lamp, auxiliary high beam lamp

A driving light is an auxiliary lamp that adds reach to your high beams and is wired to work only with them, which makes it the lamp for fast open ground and the wrong lamp for fog, corners or working around the truck.

What is a driving light?

A driving lamp is a lamp designed for supplementing the upper beam from headlamps, and it may not be lighted with the lower beam. That is California Vehicle Code 24402's whole definition, enacted in 1959 and unamended since, older than most of the vehicles wearing one. The federal truck-safety rules say the same thing from the other direction, permitting auxiliary driving lamps for use in conjunction with, but not in lieu of the required headlamps.

The standard behind the function is SAE J581, and its title is the definition again: Auxiliary High Beam Lamps now, Auxiliary Upper Beam Lamps in the revision federal law incorporates for commercial vehicles. Every name the thing has carried says the same job. A driving light is the high beam's helper, and it lives and dies with the high beam.

What follows from that

It dips when you dip. High beams exist to be switched off for oncoming traffic, and a driving light wired correctly goes dark at the same moment. That is the test that sorts driving lights from everything else sold as a forward pod: if the lamp would stay lit while traffic comes the other way, it is not doing the driving-light job, whatever the listing calls it.

It also separates the lamp from its neighbours. A fog lamp is the opposite device: it works with the low beam, sits low, spreads wide and cuts off sharply, precisely so it can stay lit when a driving light cannot. A cornering light is aimed sideways rather than forward. A work light is not aimed at the road at all. A driving light is forward reach, full stop, for the open and faster sections where reach is the thing you are short of.

In beam-pattern terms the makers put driving between spot and cornering. Baja Designs' driving/combo lens blends a 42 degree driving optic with a 9 degree spot, which the maker describes as near-field light for its lower zones plus distance for Zone 3, and Zone 3 is named for the function.
