Scene lighting

Also called scene lights, scene light, camp lights, area lights, work scene lighting

Scene lighting is flood lighting mounted on the sides, rear or rack of a vehicle and aimed down at the ground around it, so a camp, a repair or a recovery can be worked in light while the vehicle stands still.

What is scene lighting?

Scene lighting is the system of lights and fixtures used to illuminate large areas of a scene, in the definition written by the industry that named it: the Fire Apparatus Manufacturers' Association's buyer's guide, where the scene is a fire ground, a vehicle accident or a hazmat incident. Even there it is a choice rather than an obligation; the same guide opens by noting that NFPA 1901, the fire apparatus standard, does not specifically require scene lighting at all.

On an overland vehicle the scene is smaller and the idea is identical: pods or strips on the sides of a roof rack, the back of a camper or the rear bumper, throwing wide even light on the ground where the cooking, the tire change or the winch rigging is happening. Forward lights point the wrong way for every one of those jobs, which is the entire case for dedicated ones.

What makes a good one

Evenness over reach. Baja Designs describes its work and scene pattern as a wide and even beam designed to illuminate a large area with consistent and evenly distributed light, and that is the specification in one line: no hot centre, no distance, light laid flat across the few metres you are standing in. It is the same optics as a flood beam, pointed at a place instead of a road.
