Kinetic recovery rope

Also called kinetic rope, snatch strap, snatch rope, recovery rope

A kinetic recovery rope is a nylon rope built to stretch under load, storing energy from a moving vehicle and releasing it to pull a stuck one free, which makes it a different tool from a tow strap and not a substitute for one.

What is a kinetic recovery rope?

A thick braided nylon rope with an eye at each end, rated in tons. You connect it between a stuck vehicle and a moving one, leave some slack, and the recovery vehicle drives away at a walking pace. The rope goes taut, stretches by a fifth to a third of its length, and the energy stored in that stretch releases into the stuck vehicle as a pull that is far larger and far smoother than a rigid tow could deliver.

The stretch is the mechanism, not a side effect. Nylon stretches. Polyester and UHMWPE, which is what tow straps and winch lines are made of, deliberately do not. Using a tow strap in a kinetic recovery gives you a snatch with nothing absorbing it, and something in the chain then absorbs it instead.

Why the same energy makes it dangerous

A loaded kinetic rope is a spring holding a large amount of energy. If anything in the chain fails, that energy goes somewhere, and everything attached to the rope becomes a projectile travelling at the speed the rope recoils. Recovery gear has killed people, and it has killed them almost exclusively this way.

Which produces a short list of rules that are not optional. Attach only to rated recovery points, never to a tow ball, never to a hitch pin, never to a hook that could straighten and never through a hole someone drilled in a bumper. Use soft shackles rather than steel ones, because a soft shackle that fails falls to the ground. Keep everyone well clear and out of the line of the rope. And retire the rope on any damage, because a nylon rope's rating is a property of intact fibres.

Picking one

Ropes are rated by minimum breaking strength, and the usual guidance is two to three times the gross vehicle weight of the lighter vehicle in the pair. Undersized is dangerous, but so is oversized: a rope too strong for the vehicles stretches less, so it stores less energy, works less well, and puts a sharper load into the recovery points.

That two to three times figure is not folklore. Australia has written it into law: its Consumer Goods (Motor Vehicle Recovery Straps) Safety Standard 2017 requires every snatch strap sold to be permanently marked with its minimum breaking strength and with a recommendation that the minimum breaking strength of the strap should be between 2 and 3 times the gross vehicle mass of any vehicle it is used with.

Note what the Australian instrument is, though. It governs the label and nothing else: no strength requirement, no construction requirement, no test method. When the Australian regulator reviewed the area in 2016 it said plainly that there is no voluntary Australian standard for vehicle recovery straps and that it was not aware of any international ones either. There is no United States equivalent at all. So the rope in your bag is sold on a number the maker chose, tested however the maker chose.
