Soft shackle

Also called synthetic shackle, rope shackle, Dyneema shackle

A soft shackle is a loop of synthetic rope closed with a knot and an eye that does the job of a steel bow shackle at a fraction of the weight, and with far less to throw if something in the recovery fails.

What is a soft shackle?

A short length of hollow-braid UHMWPE rope, the same family of fibre as synthetic winch line, spliced into a loop with a knot at one end and an eye at the other. You pass the eye over the knot to close it. It connects a recovery rope, a winch line or a strap to a recovery point, which is what a steel bow shackle does, at typically a tenth of the weight.

They are commonly rated well above a steel shackle of comparable size, they float, they do not rust, they do not damage paint, and they can be untied and retied by hand with cold fingers, which a seized shackle pin cannot.

The reason they exist

Kinetic energy. A recovery under load stores a large amount of energy in the rope, and when something breaks that energy accelerates whatever is attached. A steel shackle weighs a pound or two and becomes a projectile. A soft shackle weighs a few ounces of rope and falls to the ground.

That is the entire safety argument and it is a good one. It does not make a recovery safe. It removes one of the ways recoveries kill people.

What they are bad at

Abrasion and edges. UHMWPE has very high tensile strength and very poor resistance to being sawn across a sharp corner. A soft shackle through a rough cast recovery hook, over a bumper edge, or against a burr on a fairlead will lose strength quickly and without much visible warning. Some come with a protective sleeve for exactly this reason.

They also degrade in sunlight over years, and they cannot be inspected the way steel can. Retire on any fuzzing, glazing, discolouration or cut fibres, and treat an unrated shackle from an unnamed seller as decorative.

Worth knowing that ASME B30.26 does not cover soft shackles at all. Every shackle type it covers has a steel pin, and it requires a shackle to have enough ductility to permanently deform before losing the ability to support the load, which a rope loop cannot do. The Cordage Institute, which standardises rope, does not publish anything on them either: the word shackle does not appear anywhere in its catalogue.

There is a further twist. The 2004 edition of B30.26 said that use of the same hardware for purposes other than lifting is excluded from the provisions of this Volume. On that wording even a steel shackle, used to recover a vehicle, falls outside the standard people cite to justify it. We have not read the current edition and cannot tell you whether that sentence survives.

Notice also who the federal rule binds. It is a construction-site regulation addressed to employers, so it does not reach a private vehicle on a trail. What it gives you is the vocabulary and a reason to trust it: rated capacity means working load limit, and the marking is supposed to be permanent and legible. That is a reasonable bar to hold your own gear to even where nobody is enforcing it.

So a soft shackle's rating is the manufacturer's own number, from the manufacturer's own test, with no standard and no third-party scheme behind it. That is an argument for buying from someone who publishes both the number and the method.
